A Message from Dr. Reilly

Dear Teachers and Instructional Staff,

This past week I met with principals and introduced The Writing Revolution (TWR), a possible game changer for you and your students that focuses on developing writing skills while reading and thinking critically. The method builds from sentences to compositions and will be embedded in curricula across all content areas and grade levels.

Currently, I am working with a group of third-grade teachers who are engaging in this work. Many of the teachers have already begun to embed these strategies into their current lessons and have reported an increase in student engagement and deeper learning within classrooms. 

I encourage you to sign up for the TWR residencies as they continue to be promoted through Teacher Talk submissions. Below you will find residencies for 2nd and 4th grade teachers. This is a paid opportunity for you and a place where minds come together and ideas come to life. 

The Office of Visual & Performing Arts presents this year’s All City Dance Festival on March 30th & Teen Arts Annual on March 31st (see details in submissions below). Join us as we continue to celebrate the talented young artists across the district!

The Office of Early Childhood is pleased to announce the re-establishment of the Preschool Teacher of the Year Awards. Four exemplary teachers who inspire our youngest learners will be selected. Nominations are limited to one teacher per school. The candidate must teach Pre-K, hold a Standard P-3 certificate, and have at least 5 years teaching experience with at least 3 years within the Newark Board of Education. Please complete the nomination form by April 6, 2022.

Paid Professional Development Opportunities by the Bergen Trauma Training Center (New)

Thanks to grant funding from the USDOE Mental Health School Professionals Grant, two paid professional development opportunities are open to all NBOE teachers and staff. The sessions will be presented by the Bergen Trauma Training Center. The first PD will be on April 5th focused on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). The second PD will be on April 6th focused on Trauma Informed Social-Emotional Learning. Each session is 1.5 hours; registration is now open in Whetstone. The Writing Revolution Teacher Residency (Grade 4) (New)

This is a paid teacher residency where participants will learn and create content-based writing instruction based on The Writing Revolution. Participants must commit to all 8 sessions, 4/7/22 – 6/2/22; 3:15 p.m. to 5:15 p.m on Thursdays, (no meeting Spring Break), and will be paid $656 upon completion.

Limited to 30 Grade 4 Classroom Teachers.

Heggerty’s Bridge the Gap – Phonics Resource (Grade 2 Teachers) (New)

Practice Based Coaching for Head Start Pre-K Teachers (New)

Math & Art Desmos Contest (New)

Create and submit your original, artistic design by April 29, 2022 at 11:59 pm to compete in the Math and Art Desmos Contest 2022. Students must be enrolled in the course for which they submit an entry. Teams of up to three (3) students may collaborate on a single entry. All entries will be evaluated according to the course-specific rubric. First-place, second-place, and third-place entries for each course will receive a TI Graphing Calculator.

Spring Break COVID-19 Testing Strategy

Greetings,

In accordance with the guidance shared by the Superintendent, all students and school staff will be required to test for COVID-19 prior to return from Spring Break. For your convenience, all schools will receive a Spring Break COVID-19 Testing Kit to distribute to each student and employee the week of April 11th. Each kit will include rapid tests and a set of instructions to process the test.
 
Students and school staff must complete the test on Sunday, April 24th prior to returning to school on Monday, April 25, 2022. All homeroom teachers will need to advise students to make them aware of this expectation. Anyone who has tested positive in the last 90 days is not required to retest during Spring Break.
 
Staff must follow the process of notifying Health Services of positive test results. Parents of students must notify their school nurse of positive test results. Additional details will be provided closer to Spring Break.

2022 Essex Vicinage Law Day Program for Schools 

The Superior Court of New Jersey – Essex Vicinage Law Day Planning Committee, in partnership with the Essex County Bar Association, invite you to register to participate in our annual Law Day Program. The 2022 Law Day theme is “Toward a More Perfect Union: The Constitution in Times of Change” and activities will include mock trial, virtual visit with a judge, multimedia art, video and writing contests*.

New Teacher Development

Teachers who are new to Newark (regardless of previous experience) are expected to attend 7 of the 9 monthly sessions. There will be two NBOE departments presenting in April – Technology and also Early Childhood.

Girls Who Code Summer Programs

Girls Who Code is offering two exciting summer programs for current high school students who identify as girls or non-binary. They can choose from a 2-week immersion program or a 6-week self-paced program that will allow them to learn coding skills, network with others as well as provide them with career resources.

The program is free and they offer a need-based grant of up to $500 for eligible students who complete the Summer Immersion Program. Please encourage interested students to apply. Any questions please reach out to Tim Nellegar.

Free Yoga Series Revised Calendar- NBOE Staff Your Well-Being Matters

Thanks to CDC Supplemental Funds, the NBOE is excited to partner with Newark Yoga Movement to offer FREE virtual yoga sessions. These sessions offer self-regulation tools, tips, and supports to relieve stress, anxiety, and trauma heightened by the pandemic. The yoga series will be offered twice a month through June 2022. Each class is 45-minutes. No prior experience is needed to participate.

Submit Student Artwork to Hope, Healing and Resistance Statewide

Submissions accepted through March 31, 2022. The NJDOE, in collaboration with Arts Ed NJ and the Art Educators of New Jersey, invites New Jersey students to participate in the Hope, Healing and Resilience through the COVID-19 Pandemic Art Showcase & Installation Project. Students from preschool to 12th grade are encouraged to submit a photo of original piece of two-dimensional (2-D) art that conveys positive messages of hope, healing, and resilience created after March 2020. Selected artwork will be displayed on the NJDOE website and in NJDOE offices.
